The habit has even earned its own nickname: \u201cbarebeating.\u201d The term refers to people who listen to audio directly from their device without headphones, forcing everyone around them to hear it.<\/p>\n
While it may not be as shocking as some other in-flight behavior, it can quickly ruin a quiet cabin environment.<\/p>\n
\u2018Can lead to removal\u2019
\nNow, one major U.S. airline is making it clear that the behavior won\u2019t be tolerated.United Airlines (UA) has quietly updated its Refusal of Transport section, the policy that outlines when the airline can \u201crefuse transport on a permanent or temporary basis,\u201d or \u201chave the right to remove from the aircraft at any point.\u201d<\/p>\n
The updated policy now lists a new form of disruptive behavior that could lead to removal: \u201cPassengers who fail to use headphones while listening to audio or video content.\u201d<\/p>\n
The rule appears alongside other violations that can lead to removal, including interfering with flight attendants, boarding while intoxicated, or engaging in disruptive behavior.<\/p>\n
By including the rule in its official passenger policies, United gives flight attendants clear authority to step in when noise becomes disruptive.<\/p>\n
Headphones enforced
\nIn a statement reported by NBC News, UA said the expectation already existed but decided to make it more explicit.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve always encouraged customers to use headphones when listening to audio content \u2013 and our Wi-Fi rules already remind customers to use headphones,\u201d United said in a statement.\u201cWith the expansion of Starlink, it seemed like a good time to make that even clearer by adding it to the contract of carriage.\u201d<\/p>\n
Services like Starlink promise significantly improved connectivity in the air, allowing travelers to watch seamless online content.<\/p>\n
\u2018Policing common courtesy\u2019
\nOnline reactions suggest many passengers welcome the change, arguing that using headphones in public spaces should already be basic courtesy.<\/p>\n

\nOn Reddit, one user wrote: \u201cImagine needing an airline to tell you to use headphones and have basic courtesy and respect for other people in public.\u201d<\/p>\n
A second netizen shared, \u201cIt\u2019s sad as a society this even needs to happen to begin with.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another commenter, who described themselves as a former \u201cdelta loyalist,\u201d said the issue has become common enough that they are considering switching airlines: \u201cMy last few flights the \u2018trash\u2019 factor went way up. Maybe I was just unlucky, but the flight attendants shouldn\u2019t leave it to me to address. I\u2019m happy to, but I don\u2019t want to risk being removed from my flight. I\u2019ll try United next trip if they take the responsibility off of me.\u201d<\/p>\n
An airline employee also weighed in on how frequently the issue comes up during flights: \u201cAs a flight attendant; we have to tell people literally every flight. It makes our jobs harder when we\u2019re stuck policing common courtesy instead of just focusing on service & safety.\u201d<\/p>\n
Responsible parenting
\nSome other Redditors said the issue often involves children watching videos without headphones, adding that parents should take more responsibility.<\/p>\n
One user shared: \u201cI was just on a delta flight where a woman with a toddler was positively screeching \u2018he\u2019s just a baby you expect him to wear headphones?!\u2019 over and over again until the flight attendant left. The child watched the same video playlist over a two-hour flight.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cUgh. Took my toddler on a flight with my spouse and she was just fine with headphones,\u201d another argued.<\/p>\n
Another airline employee echoed the frustration, saying, \u201cWe make an announcement not to use headphones while enjoying your media. But for some reason, people think that their children are the exception to the rule. So, we almost have to say that this rule applies to all devices and guests of all ages. It\u2019s a shame how parents think their children can do whatever they want.\u201d<\/p>\n
