Two Americans are on a tour of Europe and are scheduled to arrive in France on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n
But they arrived a few hours early and have little to do on a Sunday morning when everything is closed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhy don\u2019t we go to Mass?\u201d one asks the other, pointing to a nearby cathedral.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course,\u201d replies his friend. \u201cBut we don\u2019t know how the French pray, and we don\u2019t speak French!\u201d<\/p>\n
The first man thinks for a moment. \u201cI have an idea. Let\u2019s pick a man in front of us and do what he does.<\/p>\n
His friend agrees. They enter the church, sit near the front, and choose a man.<\/p>\n
Fifteen minutes pass and their plan works well.<\/p>\n
Thirty minutes, no problem.<\/p>\n
Forty-five minutes pass and they are used to the routine. Suddenly, as everyone is sitting down, the priest says something in French and the gentleman they have chosen stands up. Without thinking, the two Americans stand up.<\/p>\n
The church erupts in raucous laughter.<\/p>\n
Realizing that no one else has stood up, the two Americans quickly take their seats before deciding to leave in embarrassment. They wait for the service to end and then approach the priest, who speaks English by profession.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re really well-intentioned people \u2013 we don\u2019t speak French and we picked a man to imitate when we pray,\u201d says one.<\/p>\n
The priest laughs. \u201cAh. You\u2019re probably wondering why everyone is laughing at you?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYes,\u201d replies the other American.<\/p>\n
