As part of a new \u201cmorale initiative,\u201d each of them was allowed to bring one item to help pass the time behind bars.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Halfway through the long bus ride, one of the men leaned over to the other and asked, \u201cSo, what\u2019d you bring?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-1\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second inmate proudly pulled a wooden case from his bag and flipped it open. Inside were brushes and tubes of oil paint.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m going to paint,\u201d he said confidently. \u201cLandscapes, portraits\u2014whatever I can find. I\u2019ll be the next Picasso of Cell Block D.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He grinned, clearly pleased with himself. Then he nodded toward the first man. \u201cWhat about you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first inmate reached into his duffel and pulled out a thick stack of playing cards.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCards,\u201d he said with a wink. \u201cPoker, blackjack, solitaire, rummy\u2014I\u2019ll never be bored.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They both chuckled and then noticed the third inmate sitting quietly by the window, a smug little smile on his face.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ve been awfully quiet,\u201d the card player said. \u201cWhat did you bring that\u2019s got you looking so satisfied?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The third man slowly reached into his bag and pulled out a large box.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He set it on his lap and turned it so they could read the label.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three inmates were being transported to state prison.
