Rob and Michele Reiner\u2019s \u201cegocentric\u201d son, Nick Reiner \u2014 who has been arrested on charges of murder in their stabbing deaths \u2014 had serious \u201cbehavioral issues\u201d from a very young age, Page Six is told.<\/p>\n

In an interview the day after news broke, Alanna Zabel \u2014 who taught Rob and Michele yoga for many years in the early 2000s \u2014 told us that Nick, now 32, \u201cinterrupted pretty much all of [their] yoga sessions\u201d at the family\u2019s Los Angeles home.<\/p>\n

She said the disruption lasted \u201c20 minutes or so,\u201d elaborating to the Daily Mail that the outbursts were \u201cintense\u201d and involved a lot of \u201cscreaming.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eventually, Zabel \u2014 who has a degree in child development \u2014 told us that \u201cRob and Michelle asked [her] to do yoga with Nicky privately,\u201d hoping it would help calm his seemingly heightened nervous system.<\/p>\n

She agreed, describing Nick as \u201cthis little boy\u201d with \u201cbehavioral issues\u201d who \u201cwas always upsetting everyone\u201d but \u201ctrying to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBoys are wild in general, not just Nicky,\u201d she made sure to note. \u201cAnd so I would always focus on the physicality: \u2018Let me teach him how to do a handstand, let me teach him how to do crow so he can feel this sense of accomplishment in his body.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI really focused our sessions on trying to exhaust him so that I could get to that place of connection and mindfulness,\u201d she went on. \u201cBut I rarely got there because he was just inexhaustible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zabel recalled Nick being unusually energetic and wondered whether attention-deficit\/hyperactivity disorder was ever at play, as children and teens with ADHD are more likely to abuse substances, according to the Child Mind Institute.<\/p>\n

Nick has been battling drug addiction for more than half his life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat kind of energy requires a lot of disarming,\u201d Zabel stressed. \u201cBut I know a lot of kids who were of that intensity who turned out to be well-adjusted adults.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zabel pointed out that there are always many \u201cvariables\u201d to consider when it comes to a child\u2019s behavior, including genetic components.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s also the fact that [the Reiners live] in Hollywood. I have witnessed the children of Hollywood personalities have a really difficult time [because they are] living in a fantasy world. The parents are prioritizing many things, including them, but there\u2019s often a perception of negligence,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen living in a major city, where drugs are so accessible. You can use the name of someone, and it can lead kids down the wrong road if they don\u2019t have the right guidance.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Nick\u2019s case, however, Zabel feels he did have the right guidance, as Rob and Michele did everything in their power to help their son. She claimed they tackled his problems \u201chead-on,\u201d even though they were \u201cpassionate\u201d people with very demanding lives.<\/p>\n

But Nick \u201cchose a negative perception\u201d of his circumstances and took on \u201ca personal neglect,\u201d Zabel claimed, elaborating that he had \u201can egocentric mindset.\u201d<\/p>\n

She opined, \u201cI really think that he took on a lot of things that he didn\u2019t need to.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zabel\u2019s experience with Nick inspired her to write her first children\u2019s book, \u201cA Chair in the Air,\u201d which tells the story of a boy named \u201cNicky\u201d who \u201cis full of big feelings and even bigger energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Zabel, 53, told us Rob and Michele gave her their blessing to tell the story but chose not to participate in the book\u2019s publication at the recommendation of their family\u2019s therapist.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that there\u2019s an epidemic of life moving so fast that parents, teachers, principals, anyone in charge of children, they\u2019re moving so fast that they aren\u2019t giving proper attention,\u201d Zabel argued. \u201cAnd children need attention in order to thrive and to feel whole and secure.\u201d<\/p>\n

She concluded with \u201cadvice\u201d to parents and guardians: \u201cMake sure that you are present and grounded and giving proper attention.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rob was 78, and Michele was 68. They are survived by son Jake Reiner, 34, and daughter Romy Reiner, 28. The actor-director also had a stepdaughter whom he adopted, Tracy Reiner, 61, from his first marriage to Penny Marshall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
