The security guard caught the 82-year-old man slipping a loaf of bread into his jacket.
\nHe was supposed to detain him for the police, but instead, he sat down on the floor with him.<\/p>\n
James takes his job as a loss prevention officer seriously.
\nUsually, when he stops a shoplifter, they run or get aggressive.
\nBut when he approached the elderly man in the bread aisle, the reaction broke his heart.<\/p>\n
The man, Walter, didn\u2019t run. He just froze, his hands shaking violently as he clutched the cheap loaf of white bread to his chest.
\nWalter had never stolen a thing in his life. But his rent had gone up, his wife had passed last year, and his small pension had run dry four days ago.
\nHe was starving.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t mean to cause trouble,\u201d Walter sobbed, sliding down to the floor in shame. \u201cI just\u2026 I haven\u2019t got anything left until next week.\u201d<\/p>\n
James looked at the man, who reminded him of his own grandfather.
\nHe realized this wasn\u2019t a crime; it was a crisis.
\nHe didn\u2019t radio for backup. He didn\u2019t stand over him like an authority figure.
\nJames sat right down on the dirty linoleum floor, meeting Walter at eye level to stop the trembling.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWe\u2019re going to go to the register together,\u201d James told him. \u201cAnd I\u2019m going to buy this for you. And we\u2019re going to get you some peanut butter and milk, too.\u201d<\/p>\n
He helped Walter up, paid for a full bag of groceries, and gave him the receipt so he could walk out the front door with his dignity intact.
